Arts and Crafts

Local craft work

The area around Omaha has plenty to offer the art and craft lover. There are several art galleries in both Matakana and Warkworth to browse for that special painting to take home. In addition there are many craft shops in Warkworth, Matakana, Leigh and at RD6 (roundabout at Takatu Rd and Omaha Flats Rd) on the way to Omaha.

One of the most well known local places to visit is the Morris and James Pottery. Morris & James runs FREE tours of the pottery workshop everyday at 11.30 am, giving visitors the opportunity to see behind the scenes and watch the artisans working. We have taken many of our friends on their free tour and it is definitely worth the effort. Who knew that pots shrink to a third of their size whilst drying?

The tours run all year round except on Easter Monday, Anzac day and the Thursday before Labour Weekend in October.

For group bookings larger than 12 please ring Morris and James on 09 422 7116.

RD6 is worth a specific mention, not just because of the art gallery that is based there but also the craft co-operative where you can purchase all sorts of locally made crafts at reasonable prices knowing that proceeds are going directly to the people who make the items. RD6 also has a daytime cafe and a large restaurant that is open for evening meals. It can be found at the roundabout where Takatu Td meets Omaha Flats Rd.
